St. Rose of Lima (1586-1617)

The first native born saint of the New World. Rose was born in Lima, Peru. Her family was descended from Spanish colonizers. She lived a very austere life with extraordinary fasts,  bodily and spiritual mortifications and penance. She resisted all parental attempts to marry her off and took a vow of virginity. She became a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic and became recluse. On her head she wore a silver circlet studded in the inside with sharp barbs, like a crown of thorns. Though she lived the life of a recluse, Rose was well known in Lima. Her funeral procession was made up of government officials, city dignitaries, prominent businessmen and scores of ordinary people from Lima. She was canonized in 1671. The Feast Day of St. Rose of Lima is August 23rd.
