St. George
St.
George is the patron Saint of England and the patron Saint of soldiers and all who work for
the good of their country. Little is known about St. George. He seems to have
been born in Cappadocia (present-day Turkey) to Christian parents. He was in the
Roman army and rose to the rank of colonel. When the emperor Diocletian began to
prosecute the Christians, George protested and was eventually beheaded. The
Greeks have a great devotion to George and refer to him as "The Great Martyr".
He is most often depicted on a horse, slaying a dragon. One legend says that
George saved a kingdom from a dragon that had been terrorizing its people and
poisoning its water supply. However, dragon slaying is a favorite symbol for the
victory of Christ's grace over evil.
The Feast Day of
St. George is April 23rd.
The lower window is The Cross and a banner saying "In Hoc Signo Vinces" (In this sign you will conquer).
