Health Ministry

Parish Health Nursing helps our parish meet the spiritual health needs of our congregation. This ministry is recognized by the American Nurses Association as a sub-specialty with its own Code of Ethics and Standards of Nursing Care. The Parish Nurses encourage self-responsibility and wellness, but do not provide hands-on nursing care or perform invasive procedures.

This program is based on the belief that health is a process that includes the spiritual, emotional, physical and social dimensions of a person. It emphasizes that health is related to everything a person does, thinks and feels and is not merely the absence of disease.

The roles of the Parish Nurses have been defined as: (1) Health Education - assist in health promotion and disease prevention, (2) Coordinate and present health fairs, screenings, and so on, (3) Conduct workshops, seminars and classes to meet needs of the faith community, (4) Provide personal health counseling - to answer questions and share information on health resources for health care consumers, (5) Coordinate Volunteers and Develop Support Groups - promote awareness of the link between faith and health, (6) Integrator of Faith and Health, and (7) Health Advocate.
